Forget-Me-Not Stole Free Crochet Pattern

Introduction

The Forget-Me-Not Stole is a narrow, romantic wrap that brings a touch of Victorian charm to any outfit. It is designed for confident beginners and anyone who loves a soothing, repetitive stitch pattern that works up into something truly special. Worked in soft powder blue DK yarn, the repeating shell stitch creates a gently scalloped, wavy fabric with beautiful texture and drape. Tiny white forget-me-not flowers with sunny yellow centers sit at both ends, and a simple fringe finishes the look, making this stole perfect for pinning at the front over a dress or light coat.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: DK weight (3) yarn, acrylic or cotton blend. Main color (MC) powder blue: 400 yards. Color A white: 20 yards. Color B yellow: 5 yards.
  • Hook: 4.0 mm (G-6) crochet hook
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, sewing needle and matching thread, scissors, stitch markers (optional), a ruler or tape measure
  • Finished size: Approximately 18 inches (46 cm) wide x 60 inches (152 cm) long, excluding fringe

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • sk: skip
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • rep: repeat
  • MR: magic ring (an adjustable loop you crochet into)
  • MC: main color; A and B refer to the white and yellow contrast colors

Gauge

4 shells and 8 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in the shell stitch pattern. To check, crochet a small swatch in pattern and measure a 4-inch section; adjust your hook size if you have more or fewer shells than this.

Tips Before You Start

  • Count your shells after every few rows. You should always have 12 shells across the width, which keeps the rectangle straight and even.
  • Keep your turning chains loose so the side edges stay flat and don't pull in.
  • Make all 12 flowers before assembling so you can arrange them evenly and match the look at both ends.
  • Cut all fringe strands at once and group them in pairs ahead of time to speed up the finishing stage.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Stole (MC)

Row 1: Ch 74. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *sk 2 ch, 5 dc in next ch, sk 2 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * across, ending with sc in last ch (12 shells).

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, 2 dc in first sc, *sc in center dc of next shell, 5 dc in next sc; rep from * across, ending with 3 dc in last sc (12 shells).

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in first dc, *5 dc in next sc, sc in center dc of next shell; rep from * across, ending with sc in top of turning ch (12 shells).

Rows 4 and on: Rep Rows 2-3 until the piece measures 60 inches (152 cm), ending with a Row 3. Fasten off.

Flowers (make 12, 6 per end)

With A, make a magic ring and work 5 sc into it, join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, *sc in next sc, ch 2, sl st in same sc; rep from * around (5 petals). Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail.

With B, embroider a French knot in the center of each flower.

Fringe

Cut 120 strands of MC, each 12 inches long. Hold 2 strands together, fold in half, use the hook to pull the loop through the space between shells along one short end, then pull the ends through the loop and tighten. Attach 30 fringes evenly across each short end. Trim fringe evenly to 5 inches.

Edging (optional)

With MC, sc evenly around the entire stole, working 3 sc in each corner. Fasten off.

Assembly and Finishing

Pin the flowers evenly along both short ends of the stole, about 1 inch from the edge, using the photo as a guide, with 6 flowers at each end. Sew them in place with matching thread. Weave in all ends neatly on the wrong side. Block the stole lightly by misting it and pinning it to the finished measurements, then let it dry completely so the shell pattern opens up and the edges lie flat.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Try a soft lavender or blush pink main color for a different romantic look, keeping the white flowers and yellow centers.
  • Add a few extra flowers scattered along the long edges for a more whimsical, garden-inspired finish.
  • Skip the fringe and add a delicate picot edging instead for a lighter, more formal stole.
